Lewis Noble has lived and worked in Derbyshire since 1996. His focus lies in the physical and emotional impact of the landscape on the senses and the effect this experience has on us.
His paintings are more than snapshots or photographic frozen moments but through repeated layering and eroding of the painted surface, they contain all of the time it takes to make them.
The result is a body of work that speaks to the heart of what it means to be part of the environment.

Fantastic! Very Inspiring. Thank you Lewis✨
Lewis can you tell me what king of paper you use to paint outside please ?
I tried to enrol for your art group giving the firstmonthfree Discount, but it doesn't seem to have been accepted. Did I have to input my bank details in first?
Thank you! Do you dilute the oil paint with anything?
Hi Lewis, I'm truly liking your tutorials. It's the actual painting that you do that inspires, coaches and teaches. I would love to see more of your process and less of the talking. What you share is helpful, but just as making marks rather than looking at the canvas and contemplating, so is seeing the process similarly. Please do more videos showing your process, perhaps in length to some degree. I would absolutley love that. I am a self-taught artist and enjoy seeing other artist's processes and gleanimg form that. Thanks for all your sharing, Carole G.
Love these two paintings and the process! Thank you for sharing.
Very inspirational, Lewis...thank you!
Hi Lewis, I hope you and your family are well. Can you tell me which book you are showing in this latest vides and if I can purchase a copy. All the best, Julia (Stubbs).
Just found this….awesome!
I love how textured and worked this beautiful painting is. And thank you for the demo of varnishing while the painting is on the wall. I have my own large paintings that I have no where to lay it flat, and have been afraid to do that.
Really great inspiring and informational mark making videos..thanks for sharing, can I ask when using water soluble media like pencils and stabilo woodies, which i use alot after seeong you use them..how do you seal with medium or varnish without smudging these great marks?
Love the advice thank you ❤
Fabulous thank you 😅
I absolutely love your painting. Speaks to me.
Great video. I have a question, if you get to read this comment: do you prefer working on primed or unprimed canvases? In your previous video, the one about stretching you used an unprimed canvas. What is the benefit/advantage for using unprimed versus primed? Is it the soft beige look, instead of the starch white surface or just the cost?
Hi just enrolled in your online class June 24, 2024. Could you tell me what king of crayon you use? Thanks
I love the simplicity of the composition. Is it done in oils or acrylics?
As a lovely contrast to the vigour of your mark-making, Lewis, I really like the blotted marks offset on the opposite page of the first sketch.
Wonderful, Lewis ! I love the idea that what we put in our notebooks can be just…. Ideas , notes -to-self ! A shape , an interesting line that we really like for some reason even though it is “not “a painting “
I have a thought often you will use inks for their transparent quality. I love using water color with acrylics!! I have never used quawash, or what ever! xoxox Kat from the Pacific Northwest....hmmm.
Very helpful video thank you!
I can feel watching you work your emotions - you get quite out of breathe.
one of the best courses I've taken, Paint it Big, is brilliant!
Always inspiring! Thanks for sharing!
Very pretty work 👏
Great on location sketches… sumptuous mark making. Super exciting to see your process. Thanks so very much for sharing in this way!
Love this video - very helpful to hear what types of materials and brands that you use (I am a beginner painting in acrylics) 😇
Sehr schön, vielen Dank ❤
Thanks!
Inspiring! It is a treat to watch you work-somehow gives me “permission” to break loose and take some risks! Thank you for your generosity in sharing. It is so helpful.
You are welcome!
Lewis the music that you are using in the video its yours?
It is! I hope you like it. I need to do some new ones though, I’m getting a bit bored with these…
It is fantastic, congratulations! Is anywhere i can buy it?
wow, great energy going on here, looking good. When you have paint "thinned down" are you adding water to heavy body acrylic or are you using a thinner glazing fluid type medium ?
Just water.
You look like you are having so much fun, Lewis. Very inspiring--thank you!
Thank you!
Very nice, thanks.
Thank you
Thank you,I have been stuck in my head, afraid to start a new painting, to make a mark on the blank canvas….i will save your presentation as reminder…
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you. What size canvas and what collage paper are you using?
1mx1m. Just drawing paper.
I completely agree that just looking won't change anything - but Lewis - looking/reflecting/observing opens me to possibility - to imagine "what" the painting might want. I find it quite useful to just be quiet with the work. Then, yes, pick up something and make a mark. That is essential.
Of course everyone’s different, I’ve done this for so long now, I find I get little advantage from it. I find I do better to get on with it. Thanks for watching.
Thank you so much for sharing your process. I love your work Lewis!
My pleasure!
100% agree with you .. just starting making some marks on the surface really really give a HUGE DIFFERENCE 😊😅
Thanks for watching.
Thanks Lewis, I’ve wondered about the different glues on offer and which to buy. It’s interesting you say after research you found PVA is generally PH neutral, so no need to worry about that. I would definitely buy the big tub as it does the job at the best price.
Always good to check yourself for whatever products you use.
your paintings are always so visually THRILLING!!!
Thanks!
Could you please comment on how surfaces closse up can take you away from distances depiction? Especially when doing landscapes. Working on small images become just many on a huge surface. Thank you.
Maybe in a future video.
thank you for the consideration, I know you are very busy as an artist. I know I have not subscribed to you channel, and perhaps this might be my moment to break norm and do so! I do so enjoy your videos!!!
Great advice, I spend far too much time "painting in my head" instead of just getting on with it! Re living far away from the sea, I live on the North East coast and the first place my Derbyshire cousins head for when they visit is the beach 😊
Thanks!
Abstract art is the snapshot of whats going on in the brain of the artist. Like a brain pic ..
Maybe but I’m not an abstract painter.
Depends on your style… Abstract Expressionism, yes, just make a mark. But if your piece has a bit of ideological substance to it, then stare and make mental visualisation marks where you can sort out the effects it is going to make beforehand.
I’m not an abstract painter or abstract expressionist. I’ve been painting professionally for 30 yrs and I know that looking at my work thinking about what I should do makes no difference. As soon as I make a mark it all changes in reaction to what’s happening on the canvas. If I’d realised this earlier in my career would have made a lot more paintings. Everyone is different though so this is just me telling you what works for me.
In response to your question about doing a video about different papers, yes please!
Ok
@@LewisNobleArtist fantastic!! (Marijke is Carolyn fyi)
I like your music, too.
Thanks. I record it myself.
Acrylic medium is multipurpose. The reason mediums work with mixing in your paint is the same reason it’s an excellent glue. It loaded with the chemical elements that hold together acrylic paint and makes it stick to the painted surface. Plus you have a choice of viscosity ( liquid or heavy paste, gel) AND a choice of matte, satin or glossy finish.
Sure. I have only my preference. I’m not recommending one over the other.
Do they use the painting medium because it's archival?
Maybe but I have 30yr paintings that are as fresh as the day I made them. Up to a point I don’t think we should worry about it.
Thanks for sharing insight in your work and how you go about developing wonderful paintings
Thanks!
